Prairie View A&M University Chair
Dr. Ing Chang, P.E.

Chang photo Dr. Chang has been a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Prairie View A&M University since 1970. Dr. Chang, P.E. has a PhD in mechnical engineering and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. He has extensive industrial and governmental research experience with the Monsanto Company, IBM Corporation, McDonnell Douglas Company, 3M Corporation, NASA Johnson Space Center, and others. He has performed research in combined - thermodynamic cycle analysis for geothermal energy applications, flow turbulence in wind energy research, fatigue analysis for large compressor blades used in wind tunnels, and thermal radiation modeling for low density nonequilibrium hypersonic flows and computational fluid dynamics studies of supersonic jet engine propulsion.

As the Massie Chair at Prairie View A&M University, Dr. Chang is focusing his research effort on the development of a small-engines emission research laboratory that will study pollutants given off by small engines and determine means for their reduction. In the future, some of the facilities in the laboratory will be used for research programs in the areas of indoor air quality and power plant air pollution control.

For the past 26 years at Prairie View A&M University, Dr. Chang has received many honors and awards. He has twice been selected to receive the General Dynamics Teaching Excellence Awards, once in 1982 and the other, in 1991. He was elected to university faculty senate, and was acting Department Head from 1985 to 1986.

A Discussion with Dr. Chang on Program Goals

"The Massie Program continues to concentration its effort in the two major areas of the development of the Small Engines Testing Facility and continued work on soil remediation. An outgrowth of small engine testing is the use of alternative fuels and alternative energy sources. In addition, the small engines emission research has expanded to include general air pollution research. The recent designation of Houston, Texas, as the Nation's highest air pollution city prompted the researchers at Prairie View to lend their expertise in testing air quality and looking for solutions to the problems of the University's adjoining county and neighbor."
